Dr. Cantor served as the Senior Secretary for Clinical Education at the AAO and on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee from 2012 through 2018. Dr. Cantor previously served on the Academy's Committee of Secretaries as Secretary for Ophthalmic Knowledge from 2007-2012. He is the Jay C. and Lucile L. Kahn Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Indiana University School of Medicine Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute in Indianapolis.
Dr. Cantor received his medical degree from the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine in 1980. He completed his residency at the IU department of ophthalmology and a glaucoma fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Cantor joined the IU Department of Ophthalmology as the Director of the Glaucoma Service in 1985. In 1996, he assumed an additional role as director of the ophthalmology residency program for the department until 2006. In 1999, he attained the rank of Professor and in 2009 was named Chairman of the IU Department of Ophthalmology.
In his years with the department, Dr. Cantor has made significant contributions to the research, patient care and education mission of the department. Dr. Cantor is recognized as one of the leading experts in the development of novel medical and surgical approaches to glaucoma therapy. He created an extremely successful clinical research program and has received more than 40 grants.
Dr. Cantor is the author of numerous articles on all aspects of ophthalmology and has given more than 250 lectures and presentations worldwide on the diagnostic and medical and surgical aspects of glaucoma care. In addition, Dr. Cantor is an active member of numerous national eye organizations, including the American Ophthalmological Society, American Glaucoma Society, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology. At the Academy, Dr. Cantor served on the Glaucoma BCSC committee for 10 years as a member and chair of the committee, before assuming the leadership of the BCSC. In January 2007, Dr. Cantor became the Academy's Secretary for Ophthalmic Knowledge. He has been an associate and senior associate examiner of the American Board of Ophthalmology and served as treasurer of the American Glaucoma Society. He is a former member and chair of the Residency Review Committee for Ophthalmology and also served as chair of the Council of Review Committee Chairs, on the Executive Committee and the Strategic Initiatives Committee, Committee on Innovation in the Learning Environment, and ad hoc Committee on Non-Governmental Funding of Graduate Medical Education for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Cantor currently serves on the editorial review boards of several ophthalmology journals.
Dr. Cantor is also active in local eye organizations and is a past president of the Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology.
